My Item has been Shipped

The excitement builds. Lots of chatter today about the ability to mod an Apple versus a PC. I'll be interested to see how easy it is to switch ROM drives, upgrade RAM, swap hard drives in and out, etc. I'm assuming this especially poses a challenge with the iMac since it is an all-in-one unit. My Apple is now in the hands of the few, the proud, the United States Postal Employees. God bless 'em. Poor bastard has to lug a 42 pound box up my driveway and onto my porch.

This will be the most difficult part - upgrading.

I'm a PC guy, as are you. I did have the Atari 8-bit and Atari ST, but those both made way for the PC.

People, especially Mac people, like to rip Windows because of driver problems, "DLL Hell," and other little supposed roadblocks. Step back and look at what Windows is supposed to be able to do....

You know that PCI TV card that you bought eight years ago when you were running Windows 98? Take that out and plug it into your brand new PC. Odds are it'll work. Maybe it won't. Nonetheless, the components with PCs are commodities - cheap, reusable, and easy to find. Any PC can be upgrades with any CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/DVD-R/etc. The possible combinations of hardware the Windows is expected to handle must be the millions, if not billions.

Apple, meanwhile, has almost complete vertical control of their hardware. Sure, everything works because either Apple made it. If they didn't make it, then the limited availability of components ensures all combinations can be tested.

Windows ain't that bad.

I agree. I really have no Windows complaints to speak of. However, I suspect that the Apple may expose some issues with Windows that I have been forgiving up until this point. For example, I get the occasional fatal error in Internet Explorer (of course), DVD Shrink, and Windows Explorer. I am interested to see how often apps crash on the Apple. Windows as an OS never seems to crash any more; the blue screen of death seems to have been eliminated. My apps crash, but my OS doesn't.

In terms of mod-ability, I want to be cautious that we not indict Apple across the board because of shortcomings in the iMac. Do you know if the newer Apple Intel machines are easier to modify?
